Japanese custom/habit  ~49~九九(くく)kuku

  I will tell you something about Japanese education on math.
When we get in elementary school, we start to learn how to
do multiplication.
  1×1、1×2、1×3...
  3×1、3×2、3×3...
  9×1、9×2... 9×9
  As I showed above, we have to do multiplication quickly.
In Japan, we have useful way to remember each answers,
called 九九kuku.

  For example, we call 1×1in(1) ichi(1) ga(=) ichi(1)
in  ni(2) ga(=) ni(2)
There are phrases to remember each multiplication.
 9×9 ku(9) ku(9) hachijyuu ichi(81).
  I heard this way is peculiar to Japan.
  In this way, maybe most of people can do multiplication quickly.
But I have heard that there are much more kinds of this
sort of phrases in India.
  I feel the deep history of India on mathematics when I hear of that...

Could you tell me what kind of
multiplication you have in India?

It's very similar here in Poland. We also use the multiplication table(it's very useful). Some of the results rhyme with the numbers so, it's pretty easy for kids to memorize(they usually hate it though).

To Nvaier

???What's the multiplication table??? Isn't same as the rhyme
from 1×1to 9×9?

It's exactly the same(7x8=56, 6x6=26 9x9=81). It's just a term for it.

Every language has its own way of memorizing the numbers and the results, but the concept alone is very popular all over the world.

yes its the same as you say
1x1=1.we make children study till 20th table .
1x1=1 1x2=2
2x1=2 2x2=4
3x1=3 3x2=6
...... ....
20x1=20 20x2=40
this way until 1x20=20
2x20=40
3x20=60
......
20x20=400

we make children say these tables daily during maths class
