Japanese lifestyle ~56 ~ the policy of our government

Japanese government is going to try to increase people who
travel in Japan. Nowadays, Japanese people don't spend money for
buying goods so much. As you show on this blog, young people tend to
save money to buy cars.
To overcome this situation, Japanese government is switching the
policy. That policy is going to be rely on the consumption by foreign people.
Now there is a rule: if you want, you can get the license to reside in Japan for a while
according to your academic career, one's business career, and annual income.
The government is going to ease the requirement in the near future.
The number of foreigners who visited in Japan was 8710000 in 2012.
The government have the aim: they are going to increase the number
20000000 by 2017.
This is from today's news paper.

Interesting statistics - is this counted per number of entries or number of unique visitors or?

Most countries are allowed 3 months stay in Japan as it is right now - not bad at all already.

What I find to be a difficulty is the fact that Japan does not speak English. Even big hotels and "international" organizations actually have no English version of their websites. I am sure much more people would "dare" visit Japan if that changes.
From friends I have heard that it is practically impossible for a foreigner to buy a simple thing like a mobile phone (with subscription) in Japan, or to rent a nice place to live in. I am sure, of course, there are good reasons for this to be like that.

In any case, I am glad to hear this news - Japan's society with rich culture, history and traditions, combined with modern top-end technology - there is something for everybody to see and experience.

That's interesting. I did not know people feel hard to stay
at even high-class hotel.
I think Japan traditionally did not have opened mind toward foreign culures.(of course, some people are cociable person when they speak with foreign people)
Many people can't speak English.
And many people are not acustomed to talking with foreigners.
I have heard that it is very difficult for foreigners to lend legidence. It's because those owners of the house are cautious
because foreigners don't know Japanese rule(for example.they don't keep the rule of garbage collection)
But situation is changing. Nowadays, people who are practicing English through Internet are increasing among young people.(like me) And young people don't have stereotype toward foreign people.

Can you explain more?

"The number of foreigners who visited in Japan was 8710000 in 2012."

It is just interesting to see what the definition of "foreigners who visited" is in this case.
A visit can be defined by

* "one person for one day" - this increases the counter for each day that goes;

* "one person for indefinite time" - this increases the counter only per entry and does not take in regards how long the person stays in the country;

* "unique visits" - the counter increases only at the first visit - if a person re-enters Japan many times during the year, this is not counted.

I am sorry, being a programmer sometimes leads to professional changes in the way people think - details of definitions are not that important actually.

The important thing is that this is a great idea and it will surely have positive effect :)

I see.
The newspaper have not reported
how the government define.
So, I don't know in detail.

I like to talk with foreign people. I hope Japanese people
have opened mind more.
