きくは(ki ku wa) いっときの(it to ki no )はじ(ha ji)
きかぬは(ki ka nu wa )いっしょうの(issyou no)はじ(ha ji)
This saying tells us very important thing.
This saying tells us it is important to ask something to someone when you
don't know well.
Translation:
きくは(ki ku wa) いっときの(it to ki no )はじ(ha ji)
=Asking a question makes us feel ashamed(embarrassed) for a moment.
きかぬは(ki ka nu wa )いっしょうの(issyou no)はじ(ha ji)
=But if you don't ask someone because you feel ashamed(embarrassed),
you would have big ashamed experiences in the future.
As you may know, Japanese people are so shy. People are afraid of
making mistakes. And a lot of people are so afraid of ashamed experience.
I guess there is big cultural gap between other country.
Thanks for reading!

Hi, greetings from Italy! Thank you for the effort you put in this blog, is wonderful!
I'd like to ask a couple of things:
First, i really enjoyed reading books by Yasunari Kawabata, can you tell me some other author you may like or that are popular in Japan? Apart from Banana Yoshimoto, i know her already.
Secondly, do names of people in Japan have a meaning? For example in Italy a lot names derive from greek or latin roots, Sofia (means knowledge) Gaia (means earth) or my name (means victorious).
Thank you!
The first question:
Well,I give you some chices.
If you want to read some classical books, I think, Mishima Yukio,Murakami Haruki, Tanizaki Junichiro,
are translated into the other languages. I reccomend Mishima's work.Personally, I really like this work below.I guess he is not so famous in the other country. I think this masterpiece is translated into Italian.

Second question:
Yes,there is meaning. But it is different from your culture. It does not come from stories such as Greek myth. Each Kanji(Chinese character)has heach meaning. For example, 智 means knowledge. 勇 means courage. If you find such Chinese charactoer in person's name, people would remind such meaning.
